Remove the tooth gently
Everything possible is done to keep you comfortable, with sedation available if you’re anxious. The tooth is gently separated from the ligament and removed from the socket. Wisdom teeth removal is often performed surgically.
Heal and plan what comes next
Bite on gauze so a clot can form, then protect it for 72 hours by avoiding straws, smoking and vigorous rinsing. Dr. Haywood then meets with you to discuss your restorative options for filling the gap.

Wisdom teeth are the very back molars and tend to erupt in late adolescence, when the mouth often doesn’t have room for them. Impacted wisdom teeth are very painful and can damage other teeth, so removal before they erupt is often recommended as a precaution. Unlike regular extractions, wisdom teeth removal is often performed surgically.

Yes. Laughing gas wears off quickly, so you can drive yourself home. Oral conscious sedation is a pill taken about an hour before your visit and lasts several hours. If you’re sedated, don’t drive or operate machinery, and bring a family member or friend with you. See sedation options.
Bite on gauze for 30–45 minutes so a blood clot can form; a moist tea bag wrapped in gauze can help if oozing continues. For 72 hours, don’t rinse vigorously, use straws, smoke, drink alcohol or brush next to the site, and limit vigorous exercise for 24 hours. Resume brushing and flossing after 24 hours. Some pain and swelling is normal. An ice pack, or an unopened bag of frozen peas or corn, helps keep swelling down, and it usually subsides after 48 hours. Call the office right away if you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, swelling that continues for 2–3 days or a reaction to medication.
